Love Is in the Air (Scenic Views, Low Expectations)
COZY CORNER NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 10, 2026
Mallet State Park News
Valentine’s Day is nearly here, and Mallet State Park is once again reminding visitors that love comes in many forms. Some people celebrate with flowers and chocolates. Others celebrate with long walks, shared thermoses, and pretending they enjoy the cold. The park supports all of it.
For couples, Mallet State Park offers the perfect romantic backdrop: quiet trails, scenic overlooks, and just enough wind to make holding hands feel like a joint survival strategy. Nothing says “true love” like agreeing not to complain out loud about the weather.
Wildlife, of course, will also be observing Valentine’s Day in their own way. Recent behavior suggests:
Geese pairing off loudly and aggressively, as nature intended
Deer standing very close together for warmth, romance, or mutual judgment
Squirrels chasing each other at high speed, which may be courtship or may be unresolved issues
A raccoon dining alone behind the visitor center, thriving
For solo visitors, Valentine’s Day at the park is equally meaningful. You are welcome to enjoy:
A peaceful hike with zero relationship discussions
A picnic for one that does not require compromise
Reading a book on a bench without anyone asking, “Are you done with that chapter yet?”
The comforting knowledge that trees never ask where this is “going”
Those seeking grand gestures may consider:
Watching the sunset together in silence, like mature adults
Sharing trail mix without keeping score
Taking a photo that looks romantic but is mostly about good lighting
Please note that Mallet State Park does not endorse proposals on icy footbridges, dramatic declarations shouted across the lake, or interpretive dances meant to symbolize commitment. We also remind visitors that wildlife is not interested in your love story and will not move out of the frame for photos.
Whether you arrive with a partner, a friend, a dog, or a very complicated history with Valentine’s Day, Mallet State Park welcomes you. Love may be in the air—but so is cold, wind, and the unmistakable sound of geese judging your choices.
Happy Valentine’s Day from Mallet State Park.
